Background

Moeckel & Co. is the vehicle through which Mr. Moeckel has led numerous hospitality industry real estate and finance initiatives as a principal, intermediary or advisor.  He is a founding general partner of Thayer Hotel Investments, L.P. which, together with its affiliate Thayer Lodging Group, sponsors and manages private investment partnerships investing in U.S. hotel real estate.  Mr. Moeckel joined Frederic V. Malek, Gary Wilson and Leland Pillsbury in the formation of the general partner and, acting in the capacity of Chief Investment & Acquisitions Officer, was responsible for identifying and negotiating the funds’ acquisitions.  Thayer investors include the principals, pension funds and other large pools of domestic and offshore capital.

Following a recapitalization of the funds in 1999, Mr. Moeckel relinquished his day-to-day Thayer responsibilities but remains an investor and general partner of the funds.  He  relocated from Atlanta to Spring Island, South Carolina where a 2001 advisory engagement with Chaffin Light Associates to formulate new marketing initiatives for their southeastern developments led to the formation of Spring Island & Callawassie Realty, which he led as President until 2004.  In this role, he augmented his significant hospitality industry experience with a two-year immersion into the restructuring, sales and marketing of high-end recreational land developments with industry leaders Jim Chaffin and Jim Light, developers of Spring Island, The Roaring Fork Club in Aspen and Balsam Mountain Preserve in North Carolina.

Previously in his career, Mr. Moeckel served as Senior Vice President & Chief Development Officer for Embassy Suites, Inc. responsible for worldwide development, franchising and asset sales; as Senior Vice President & Director of Hotel Development for The Landmarks Group, an Atlanta-based commercial real estate developer; as an advisor to TIAA/CREF on the yearlong restructuring of their $1.6 billion hotel loan portfolio; as a principal with Laventhol & Horwath responsible for their real estate consulting practice in the southeast and as a Director in the Market Planning and Acquisitions and Dispositions Departments of Holiday Corporation.

Mr. Moeckel served as an independent director of Metric Income Trust Series, a San-Francisco-based REIT sponsored by SSR Realty Advisors and as a past President of the International Society of Hospitality Consultants (ISHC).  Professional affiliations include the Urban Land Institute, where he was Vice Chairman of the Hotel Development Council and currently serves on the Recreational Land Development Council, and the Cornell Hotel Society.  He is also a counselor and board member at Camp Sunshine, a nationally recognized program for kids with cancer.  He graduated from Cornell University in 1972 following service with U.S. Army intelligence in Vietnam.
